Hate and Extremism in a Polarized World

Call for papers – Hate and Extremism in a Polarized World November 5-6, 2026

Ontario Tech University, Oshawa, Ontario, Canada

The Centre on Hate, Bias and Extremism at Ontario Tech University is hosting its first biennial global conference on Hate Studies. The need for informed and meaningful dialogue on the contours of hate and extremism cannot be overstated in light of the dramatic surge of identity-based policy, discourse, and violence across the globe.

Just as the wicked problem of hate is multidimensional, so too are its remedies. We welcome participation from practitioners, civil society organizations, and policy makers, along with academics. Our hope is that you take this opportunity to engage with like-minded others across sectors and across borders.

While not exclusive to these topics, we encourage you to propose papers addressing the following themes:

Contexts and consequences of hate crime

  1. The political discourses of hate
  2. Legislating for and against hate
  3. The rise in diverse – and often overlapping – forms of extremism
  4. Keep hope alive – countering hate and extremism
  5. Contexts and consequences of hate crime
