CANdiLab

CANdiLab aims to comprehend the integrity of cognitive and affective processes in antisocial populations, utilizing diverse neuroscientific and psychological methodologies to facilitate scientific advancements.

Team 

CANdiLab is led by Dr. Matthew Shane, whose specialization and research integrate his doctoral and post-doctoral studies in personality and abnormal psychology. Dr. Shane employs behavioural, cognitive, psychological, and neuroimaging techniques to provide a thorough assessment of cognitive and emotional functions and dysfunctions. CANdiLab possesses a comprehensive laboratory comprising numerous members across diverse academic tiers, including PhD candidates Femi Carrington, MSc candidates Corina Picco and Ardeshir Mordezaei, research assistants Jamie Van Doorselaer, Andrea Manning, Kirsten Stewart, Jingbei Zhang, Rahma Kahn, Mayra Leblanc, and BA graduate Soha Dehghan.

Current projects 

CANdiLab aims to understand cognitive processes in the antisocial population, currently focusing on three major topics: “Can psychopathic individuals feel emotions?” CANdiLab is investigating whether psychopaths are incapable of feeling emotions or simply choose not to, utilizing scientific technology to determine if their brain regions activate in response to negative stimuli. CANdiLab is also working to “isolate neural features of antiscialiality from those of substance use disorders.” The neural features of each disorder are difficult to distinguish when 93% of individuals with ASPD are also diagnosed with an SUD, as noted by CANdiLab in their analysis of the comorbidity of antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and substance abuse disorder (SUD). The objective of CANdiLab is to differentiate the neural differences between psychotherapy and substance use disorders in light of this challenge. The final research area that CANdiLab is currently concentrating on is "Virtuous versus Nonvirtuous Empathy." CANdiLab researchers are employing both psychological and neuroscientific methods to assess the emergence of empathy for non-virtuous motivated. 

Furthermore, CANdiLab researchers are conducting a diverse array of supplementary research projects that integrate a variety of available psychological and neuroscientific methodologies, such as:

  • Detailed personality assessments
  • Detailed clinical/forensic assessments
  • Cognitive/Affective assessments
  • Psychophysiological measures: HR, GSR, EMG
  • Neural measures: sMRI, fMRI, [fNIRS coming soon]
  • Neurostimulation protocols: tDCS
  • Facial affect analysis: AI-based FACS analyses
