My experience at Ontario Tech University in the Communications and Digital Media program was extremely positive. The staff and students were all so welcoming and encouraged me to succeed in my post-graduate career. Notably, through my program, I was able to participate in both a practicum and an internship. During my practicum in March 2023, I was able to gain hands-on experience working with the Eastern York Region North Durham Ontario Health Team, a company with limited social media presence. The practicum enhanced my ability to develop strategies to promote communication satisfaction. In the summer of 2022, I also had the opportunity to work with the Canadian Society of Association Executives (CSAE) as a Communications and Marketing intern. My internship at CSAE allowed me to network with many individuals in the association field from across Canada. The chance to work in the not-for-profit sector advanced my career aspiration of making a positive difference through effective communication. My internship experience directly contributed to securing full-time employment in my field, as I now hold the position of Engagement Specialist at CSAE. Beyond the opportunities within my program, I also volunteered at the university in numerous capacities including the Ambassador, Peer Leader, and Ridgeback Mentor programs. In addition, I engaged in a community clean-up effort with the city of Oshawa, presented the findings of the Level 4 Ambassador Project with CityStudio, and was a co-coordinator of the inaugural Downtown Community Engagement Pizza Party at Ontario Tech University. These volunteer opportunities allowed me to develop the leadership skills necessary to succeed in the field of Communications and Digital Media. My various volunteer initiatives paired with the education I gained at Ontario Tech University allowed me to kickstart my career.
