Mental Health

We are committed to supporting your mental health in a variety of ways.

Ontario Tech University provides support and assistance for students experiencing academic challenges caused by personal, physical or emotional difficulties by offering a range of short-term counselling and therapy services to students using a 'Stepped Care' model. Students in crisis will also be provided support and counselling as needed through appropriate referrals to the community. There is no charge for these services.  Learn more about the Stepped Care model.

Our new Stepped Care approach allows us to offer you a range of supports to get you through life’s challenges. Explore the Stepped Care options below. If you would like some help navigating your choices, book an intake session with our Student Wellness Coordinator.

If you are in distress and would like information about what resources you can access, review the distress flowchart to help find the support that will be most helpful for your situation. Ontario Tech University also works in partnership with the community or with the student's home community to refer to appropriate resources when there is a need for specialized mental health services or longer-term counselling support.

Self-Help Resources

There are lots of ways that you can improve your mental health. The university has many resources students can use to help support both them and their mental health. You can use these resources to explore mental health websites and apps, connect with a helpline through phone or text or find support in your community.

Single Session Supports

Student Mental Health Services offers professional one-on-one mental health support for students at Ontario Tech University. If you would like to connect with a member of our team, you can:

  • Book an intake session with our Student Wellness Coordinator to get started. They will assess your needs and make appropriate recommendations such as self-help resources, peer support, a mental health workshop or counselling.
  • Book a 45 minute drop-in appointment if you are having a rough day and are in emotional distress.  A counsellor can help with grounding, emotional regulation and problem solving techniques.

For more information and to book an appointment, please visit The Office of Student Life.

Groups, Peer Support, and Workshops

If you are in need of a community that can relate to what you're going through, or if you would like to be a support to others, Student Life offers a variety of opportunities.

Please visit the Office of Student Life for more information on Campus Connected, mental health groups, peer mentors, and workshops.

Therapy and Specialized Supports

Sometimes self-help options, workshops or groups do not provide sufficient mental health support. If you need one-on-one support from one of our mental health counsellors or a referral to a specialized program, reach out:

Recreation

Go to the official Campus Recreation website to learn about how you can stay healthy and have fun on campus. Explore intramurals and sports clubs, and check out the Flex gym, Campus Fieldhouse and Campus Ice Centre.

Sexual Violence Support and Education

At Ontario Tech we are committed to:

  • Supporting survivors of all identities if they have experienced sexual violence.
  • Connecting our community members to the tools they need to provide effective support for individuals who may disclose.
  • Engaging our campus community in programming initiatives to help build a culture of consent and empower individuals to intervene in situations where sexual violence has taken or may take place.

Learn about how you can get help and support survivors, and read the university's Student Sexual Violence Policy and Procedures for Responding to Incidents of Sexual Violence by visiting The Office of Student Life - Sexual Violence Support and Education.
